North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to implement additional military measures and deploy strategic assets in response to the growing presence of U.S. forces in South Korea, as the country prepares for a high-profile military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea on October 10.
In a statement released by state media KCNA, Kim emphasized that North Korea’s strategic interests in the region have intensified in direct proportion to U.S. military buildup. “We have accordingly allocated special assets to key targets of interest,” he said, signaling a potential shift in Pyongyang’s defense posture.
The remarks follow South Korea’s recent intelligence assessment that Pyongyang has significantly increased its stockpile of highly-enriched and weapons-grade uranium. Analysts warn this could indicate a surge in nuclear capabilities.
Kim’s comments were delivered during a military exhibition ahead of the parade, where he reiterated the need to strengthen North Korea’s “nuclear shield and sword,” asserting that only a nuclear counteraction could ensure national security.
The October 10 parade is expected to showcase North Korea’s latest military hardware, including the next-generation Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile. South Korean media reports suggest Pyongyang may also conduct a test launch around the anniversary date.
Preparations for the parade are underway, with signs of large-scale mobilization and equipment movement. Tens of thousands of attendees are expected to gather for the nighttime event.
Despite diplomatic overtures from U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korea’s newly elected President Lee Jae-myung, Kim has maintained a confrontational stance. Lee has promised a more conciliatory approach compared to his predecessor, Yoon Suk-yeol.
North Korea has also deepened military cooperation with Russia, reportedly supplying troops and artillery in support of President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. Kim recently joined Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin in Beijing for a military parade commemorating the end of World War II, underscoring Pyongyang’s growing alignment with Beijing and Moscow.
As tensions mount, the upcoming parade is poised to serve not only as a domestic celebration but also as a strategic message to regional and global powers.
